How to Come Up with Hundreds of How to Ideas

Electric Light bulb from Crestock Stock Photo

Want to create a stream of passive income?
Of course you do – who doesn’t? Writing “how to” articles is a great way to create a passive stream of income. Despite all the faults of the internet, there are millions of people searching “how to do (anything).” Whether you’re writing for your own blog or for paying sites, you can capture a share of the how to market with great articles. Here’s how to come up with literally hundreds of ideas for writing “how to” internet articles.

Go “Old School” for a moment.
You’ll need an old fashioned pad of paper and a pen. Not a pencil because there’s no need to erase anything. We’re talking about brainstorming basics here and there are no bad ideas during brainstorming. On the left side column of your pad, number each line, 1 – 100 and write the words “How to” on each line. Give yourself plenty of relaxation, time and freedom from pressures or obligations.

Now, Think…
What have I learned in my years on the planet that I can share with other people? Start writing down the ideas as they come. Don’t edit yourself or refuse to write one. If you think it, write it. While you’re writing, other ideas will start flowing and you should write everything. I started this list and after a few days, had about 300 how to ideas.

Keep your pad handy…
As you start writing your awesome how to internet articles, you’ll get more ideas. Stop whatever you’re doing and write them down. If you ever get stuck and don’t know what to do with your time or feel writer’s block. Just looking at all the great ideas you’ve written down will give you the creative inspiration to write something.

Need more ideas?
Maybe you detest paper. Perhaps you’ve forgotten how to use a pen. Maybe you just don’t like my idea for brainstorming. Whatever the case, here’s another idea for finding topics for writing how to articles. Believe it or not, you can “borrow” the ideas a popular how to website offers to its writers. eHow (and no, I’m not giving them a link) asks its readers to request articles. Sign up to be a member with them. You don’t have to ever write an article although you can make a few bucks writing articles for them. The feature I’m suggesting you look at is requests for articles. Their users suggest How to articles that they would like to read. You can get ideas from them to get you started.

Even more ideas…
If you don’t already have hundreds of ideas for how to articles by now, I’ve got one more suggestion you might try to find inspiration. At your next family gathering, (bring your pad, of course) and ask everyone in your family to write down ten things they’d like to learn in the format of “how to.” You may or may not know anything at all about the topics they would like to learn about but that’s ok. You know how to research and write a great internet article. If you have ten family members you just got 100 ideas from people who are potential internet searchers and one thing about even your family members, if they’re interested in learning about something, so are thousands of other people.

Want more???
If you don’t have at least 1000 how to ideas, more than you could ever write in your life time by this point, you can go to Google/trends and find all the how to ideas you’ve ever imagined. Google/trends shows the top 100 searches of the day and you could almost certainly find a dozen how to ideas related to what people are actually searching for. If you get good at this you can get massive traffic to your “How to” article, particularly, with Google Real-Time Search showing your article literally seconds after you’ve posted it.

Warning:  Brainstorming is addictive!

You can get very excited as ideas start flowing out of you like an open fire hydrant.  It’s ok to spend some time enjoying the naturally energetic high that comes from dwelling in ideas but to ideas are only worth something if you do something with them.

If you want to Make Money from ideas…

If you write articles or would like to write articles to earn money, consider this fantastic program to turn one of your articles into hundreds of unique articles, submitted to article directories for maximizing your payment

Best and Worst Public Water in the U.S.

I was engaged in some random web surfing when I came across this blog post about the best and worst water in the U.S.  After reading the article, I had to think, where in the world have I tasted the best tap water ever?  Well, that would have to be  in North Idaho, of course.  Honestly, I have never lived anywhere that I had such a good feeling about taking a drink of water from the faucet.  The Rathdrum aquifer that supplies the Inland Northwest with pleasant tasting, clean water is a hard working wonder of nature and I’m completely impressed.  So I’m reading the article and they’re listing the top 100 of “big cities”, hmm..what qualifies as a big city?  Well, Seattle, clearly a big city scored #25 on the list and Las Vegas scored #3 on the worst and clearly it qualifies as a big city.  Is Spokane a big city?  It’s not on the top 100 of best or worst.  I used to live in Las Vegas and I can attest that it has some nasty tasting water.  I have to apologize to my brother-in-law now because he is the quality control supervisor for the Las Vegas Valley Water District.  It’s not his fault the water tastes bad.  The storm drains in Las Vegas feed directly into Lake Mead where the largest supply of public drinking water comes from.  Can you imagine what people put down the storm drains in Las Vegas- yuck!  When my Wife and I arrived in North Idaho, and started drinking from the faucet at Farragut state park, I don’t think we’ve purchased a single bottle of water since.  The United States deserves to know that there are places where the water comes clean from the ground, tastes good and with minimal additives (flouride? chlorine?) it still tastes good and doesn’t send you to the phone book to find the nearest bottled water distributer.  Just my two cents on the issue, anyone out there have a thought about their city’s tap water?  I’d love to hear it.

How to make your own calendar

Making your own calendar is fun and easy.  Every year, my parents make a personalized calendar that they give as gifts.  The calendar is filled with my father’s exceptional photographs from that year’s trip – last year was Antarctica.  The really nice thing about getting one of their calendars is that they insert everyone’s birthday and anniversary so I never miss an important date.  I finally asked him how he did it and was surprised at how easy it is to make your own personalized calendar.

1.  Find 13 of your photographs you love.  One for the cover and one for each month of the year.  This should be easy as you took photos all year long I’m sure.

2.  Go to shutterfly.com and register – it only takes a minute to register and you’re in business.  You’ll notice that right now they’re offering 20% off of 2010 calendars – limited time offer, they don’t say for how long.

3.  In the navigation bar at the top of the page click on the link for Calendars it will then prompt you to a button that says, appropriately Go!

4.  They provide you with all the instructions you need to upload, crop, insert your own custom information.  Pick the amount of them you want to receive, pay and you’re done.

I can tell you that these are of professional quality.  I have received two as gifts and have really appreciated having them in my home and office.  There you have it, an easy way to show off your photography, fulfill the need for your own 2010 calendar and have gifts for friends and family.

The benifits of selling your website on Flippa vs. eBay.

Recently – Selling websites on the web has become very problematic. “Just-how-much” is a website worth these days? I personally build websites and then turn-around and sell them to people that want to be in business on the web. This is a very tricky market, to sell your website you need to reach real buyers. I have sold websites on eBay, but I have only listed websites for sale on Flippa, never actually sold any. I will share my experience and what I think are the pros-and-cons of selling websites on eBay versus Flippa and give you some valuable tips for saving money and getting even more money for your website!

I was reading is article I found – I think it was the USA Today, it said any website or domain name in 5 years could be worth 500x times what it’s worth right now.

The number one problem you face when looking to get a good price for your website, is the mound of horse-shit scam websites that promise large returns for no investment. This is what buyers that are looking to buy websites have to wade though when looking to buy. Stupid and ridiculous domains priced for 1 million, affiliate websites scams, all kind of scams.

The other problem – It is difficult to sell a website to just anyone, most people are a little intimated or simply have no idea what they are even looking at. I don’t think either eBay or Flippa really offer the “optimal selling experience” for selling websites. Ideally  you want to list your website where you will attract the most potential buyers. Buyer beware!

Flippa – They boast making something like 10 million in sales, to be honest I found this very hard to believe. I didn’t feel like that many of the listings on Flippa ended in a actual sale of the website. All I seen was a bunch of junk websites and maybe 2-10 real offerings. The websites I listed on Flippa, I feel really didn’t attract much attention. …and it was over priced, but again when I listed my sites for sale it was about 12 months ago. 😉 Last I heard it was even higher now, with some “success fee” bullshit. read more about dat chit

eBay – has the traffic and the following, brought you lots and lots of potential buyers, also you can list the website for sale in the niche category you are looking to target. Example: Remote Control Cars. I think eBay brings a stronger buyer base to the table than Flippa does, and at a reasonable cost.

*** SCOTTY – FUN FACT***: You can also buy traffic for your listing, or what you could do instead – Make a single sales page with blogger, or even a page on the website that your selling, then set up AdWords account and bid on keywords against Flippa, targeting keywords like; buy websites, website investments, website business, web business. This will allow you to go-directly to the horses mouth for real website buyers not just a bunch of lookie-losers.

*This is also a good way of selling your website, with less chance of your site being copied by a fake-buyer.

I had my best results selling website – When I self-marketed the website, I was WAYYYY more effective. Or you can look at it this way… The few hundred bucks that you would pay for the “success fee” for selling your website on Flippa, can be used to get more targeted clicks from AdWords, and you might even save a few bucks!

RECOMMEND: Craigslist, AdWords.

*This is how I selling my websites now: http://scottrasher.com/domains-for-sale/

These days I really don’t spend time selling websites, I spend more of my time blogging about stupid shit like this. But I found posting websites for sale on blogs or free classifieds like Craigslist and self marketing, was by-far the best way to sell your websites.

Selling websites FAQ:

Most people buying website don’t have any idea what they are buying.

What you need to guard against is being robed for your intellectual property.

You are not covered under Paypal terms in a transactions a tangible product in not present. Example: files, websites, domains

Fun Facts:

I have sold about 50 websites on eBay and about 100 total.

How to Make an Award Winning Chili Recipe

Whether you want to enter a chili cook-off, a competitive cooking contest or just create a signature dish, there are several elements to a great chili which can be mastered to create a unique chili recipe. This article is a strategy to create a world class chili recipe that you will be proud to call your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Instructions

things you’ll need:

Whole dried chilies and spices
A spice grinder
Tasters
and lots of Patience

1 The foundation of any great chili recipe is a custom chili powder. You won’t win any awards with a store bought chili powder. Take a trip to the grocery store and look for the whole dried chilies. They are usually by the produce section, the spice aisle or the Hispanic food section. Dried chilies typically are hanging in bags and there are several varieties available. I choose three types of dried chili; New Mexican Entero, Pasillas and Chili de Arbol. Where you find the dried chili pods, you will find Mexican oregano and whole cumin seed. While you’re at the store, pick up granulated garlic and smoked paprika.

2 Slice and de-seed three of each variety of dried chili pods. Cut them in small pieces and place in a dry, hot skillet with two tablespoons of whole cumin seeds. Toast the seeds and chili together until they release their fragrance. Heat causes the chili and cumin to release its oil which greatly improves it’s flavor and aromatic properties. Remove from skillet and let cool.

3 Put the chili and whole cumin seed in your spice grinder with a tablespoon of granulated garlic, 1 tablespoon of Mexican oregano, 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika and grind to a fine powder. This is an example of a custom chili powder. If you did nothing else, your chili would be better than most.

4 Review several basic chili recipes to find the type of chili you want to create. They vary in types of beans, meat and base. Whatever you choose, replace the chili powder in the recipe with your custom blend. Be sure to write down exactly what you’re using so you can reproduce it.

5 Experiment to find a secret ingredient which distinguishes your chili from the crowd. Perhaps you enjoy the flavor of chipotle chilies or maybe you add molasses to your chili. Some cooks experiment for years to perfect a secret ingredient. Mine has been adding Dijon mustard and Mexican chocolate. Your secret ingredient is a personal preference and a requirement for an award winning recipe.

6 The most important step in creating your famous chili recipe is to have fun while doing it. making a recipe can be hard work and take many different attempts but the reward is the praise of the people asking you for a second helping. There is not much more satisfying than people bragging about your fantastic chili.

Tips & Warnings

Take your chili powder to the next level by buying fresh chilies from Hatch, New Mexico, dehydrating and grinding.

If you like your chili extra hot, include fresh jalapenos and serano chilies to the mix.

Cayenne pepper will add an additional layer of spice and flavor to a bland chili.

Be careful when working with chili peppers. Wear latex, food handling gloves or wash hands immediately after handling.

Do not touch your face if handling chilies without gloves.

Implications of Google Real-Time Search

Anyone who’s been trying to keep up with how search engine users find internet content had to be blown away by the announcement of Google’s Real-Time search function.

Today a representative of Google stated, “relevance has become the critical factor.” My question is what was it before? It’s always been relevance that Google used to index the internet, right? Well, relevance and a website’s ranking according to a super top secret formula creating an entire industry attempting to “crack the code” as it were.

Assume for a second that it is even possible for any search engine to be able to spider the entire internet on a real time basis. If that is true then anyone with a blog has the possibility of thousands of views from a speedy post about a current trend. In the past, trending can give even a poorly Google ranked blog a shot at some internet traffic. If you were willing to get up early and hit Google/trends you could often predict something that would peak later in the day and an early morning blog post might show up by the time it peaked. When I wrote for paying article sites, they tended to rank higher and would receive more traffic than my blog posts with the same keywords.

Google Real-Time, according to Google will provide real time information from tweets, blog posts and sources like MySpace and Facebook. I guess I missed something but aren’t tweets usually just spam? Why would anyone searching for “relevant” information want to see what Bobby Joe in Tucson thinks about Tiger Woods affair and bothered to tweet or post on his MySpace page? In order to actually be in “real time” Google must be tapping into various RSS feeds to collect this information. I cannot see how the information could come in real time from spiders. But then again I’m not an engineer – I’m just a speculator. For Google’s real time searching, are there sites favored over others? This I will like to see.

While my mind is still boggled by the full array of implications raised by this search function, I think it could actually benefit bloggers and article writers willing to work fast and hone their trend prediction skills. I guess we’ll see.

How to Make Money Selling eBooks Ethically

The Old School Get Rich Quick Scheme…

The other day, I posted an article about the old scam I called Mail Box Money.  To re-cap, Mail Box Money is an old marketing trick that’s still used today – just in a different form.  The way it worked was, through compelling ad copy – read, tugging your psychological head strings – the desire to be rich, have a mansion, a Ferrari,  have women (or men) begging for your attention, or just not to have to work any more – you would send your ten bucks to the rich guy and he would send you the “blueprint for success,” the how to do what I did manual.  He would go to his mailbox, laugh at the envelopes and mail off the pamphlet describing how to pull off the mail box money scam.  It’s just slightly more ethical than the Ponzi scheme pulled off famously by Bernie Madoff.  Today the mail box money is email box money and here’s how it’s done.

Ever wanted to do your own get rich quick scheme?  Follow along…

The electronic version is accomplished by writing an ebook.  This is pretty simple to do really.  Any word processor and a catchy title – “Affiliate Marketing Mastery” – “Google Ad Destroyer” – “Arm Chair Millions,”  whatever.  With your 50 page ebook containing all the “secrets” of how to make money you then set about making a website that’s called a pitch page.  It’s just a scrolling css page with fake screen shots of hot cars, mansions, fake checks, testimonials, and the familiar pitch – if you’re not making money like I am, you NEED my ebook.  The page has to have the latest technology like pop-up windows that ask do you really want to throw away your life working a boring job – click here to return – video of rich internet marketers and whatever the latest gizmo is.  A good web designer with some tricks in the bag can pull this off for you, no problem.  Better yet, cut him in on the action and he might do it for free.  Then you post your new pitch to the multitude of Affiliate Marketing sites as a publisher.  Let’s say you want to charge $100 for your awesome e-book.  You offer affiliates $75 for every copy they sell.  That sounds high but with a price point like that you’ll have a hundred thousand minions putting up websites, spamming their email networks, clamoring to get traffic to your pitch page, which if good, should convert at least 25% of the leads.   That’s it in a nutshell – an electronic version of the mail box money, get rich quick idea that’s been around as long as there have been people wanting to get rich quick.

It doesn’t have to be a scam…

People will buy quality ebooks to learn how to do anything.  Your ebook doesn’t have to be about the internet or getting rich quick.    It can be about how to build your own greenhouse, how to start a window tinting business, anything really.  Affiliate Marketing sites promote ebooks about any subject if there are people willing to buy them, and there are – it’s just getting an affiliate to promote an ebook is a factor of percentage of conversion and commission paid so be generous, have a great pitch site and voila – an independent sales force selling your idea.  Here are a couple examples of legitimate ebooks and pitch pages for your review:  Dog Training and DIY Solar Power.

Want passive and residual income?

Selling an idea has and will continue to be the single most profitable thing that can be sold.  An idea, after all, is free.  They’re just thoughts floating around, available to anyone who might happen to think it.  But, an idea that is not expressed is still nothing.  Something must be done with an idea for it to be sold.  An ebook is an expression of an idea that can be sold.  Once it’s completed, it can be sold over and over again, creating passive and residual income.

Express your idea…

If you have a great idea – one in which you think people all over the world would like to know – but for whatever reason are having trouble expressing it, all is not lost.  Contact Jeff today about his ghost writing service.  If the idea is good enough, he will professionally complete your ebook  using Adobe InDesign CS3, with your name as the author, create the pitch site and place the ebook on the Affiliate Market for a percentage of the sales.  There’s no reason not to realize your dream of a passive and residual income from your idea.  Pitch the idea now:

How to Get a Venice Beach Vendor’s License

Anyone who has ever tried to find out information on how to get a vendor’s permit for Venice Beach has probably run into the same difficulties that I have. It is very discouraging just trying to get through to the right person who can tell you what you can and can’t sell. After being re-routed about 7 times, I finally reached a very hostile rep for the parks and recreations department for the City of Los Angeles who gave me very vague answers. When I was dissatisfied with his response, I did some further investigation today that helped to uncover the mystery of the vending situation.

First of all, it is called a Permit and not a License. The permit is called a “freedom of expression” permit and is only good for the west side of the boardwalk. It costs $25.00 for the initial fee which is good for a year, and then a $10.00 annual fee for a lifetime. Pretty reasonable, I must admit, but the restrictions on what you can sell is very confusing. I wanted to sell some vintage costume jewelry and was told that that was considered “commercial” and therefore not allowed. If my jewelry had a religious connotation, or had the words “peace, love, spirituality, etc”, or if it was political in nature, those pieces would be allowed. I would need to bring my jewelry with me to the office where I would buy the permit to make sure that it was appropriate and fit into the guidelines of “freedom of expression”. I had been told the day before that if I wanted to take my chances and go ahead and sell the jewelry that was deemed inappropriate, were I to be caught I would be cited with a misdemeanor ticket and would have to appear in court. Now how well manned the boardwalk is, is up for interpretation, but we have already received one ticket and really can’t see why we would want another. In addition to the “permit”, you also need to get a seller’s license at a different location in order to sell on Venice Beach. You can download this slip from the City of Los Angeles website and mail it in, or you can go directly to their office and be issued one on the spot. This is a free license, but a required one.

Once you have paid for your “permit” and received your seller’s license, you then must go to 1800 Ocean Front Walk Venice, Ca. 90291 on Tuesday morning @ 8:30 and drop your “permit” into a drum, where it will be pulled “lottery” style to see if you are able to get a spot on the beach. There are currently 300 applicants for 100 spots, so you have a 1 in 3 chance of actually getting a spot. Call (310) 396-6764 for more information. I hope this information can save someone in the future from the nonsense that I had to go through. Just make sure that whatever “expression” you want to sell fits their idea of “freedom”!

How to Take Better Black and White Photos

A black and white photograph can provoke powerful emotions and convey artistry. Symmetry, shadows and textures can be revealed in a black and white picture that appear flat in full color. This article describes how to “train the eyes” to see the world in black and white.

Things you’ll need:

A camera

Red sunglasses

1 I was introduced to making black and white pictures in high school with a film camera. The intention was to produce a striking image with depth, shadows, textures and a feeling of emotion. One way to do this is to simply take many pictures and hope that they come out well in black and white. Another way is to train your eyes to see in black and white. I was walking in the desert around Nelson, Nevada and stumbled upon this abandoned gas pump. It was set against a bunch of rusted junk and green shrubbery. The pump was rusted where the old paint had peeled off. Since the pump was white and the green of the shrubs would be dark in a black and white photo, I decided this was a good subject.

2 Buy a pair of red sunglasses. I discovered by accident (after finding a pair) that red sunglasses would make greens darker and give a good idea of whether an image would look striking in black and white.

3 Walk around and look at the world with your cheap red sunglasses. It will seem odd at first but eventually you’ll see shapes, shadows, symmetry and lines. These are elements that make black and white photography work. This photo is of the gas pump as you would see it with through your cheap red sunglasses. The red filter shows the contrast between the white pump, rust and black letters. It also shows how the greens will darken in greyscale.

4 The final step is to capture your image and process it in your favorite photo editing software. Picasa, the free google application has a variety of black and white editing functions. Photoshop offers a multitude of controls to tweak and perfect your image to your artistic taste. The old saying, “looking at the world through rose colored glasses,” can be a photographic training tool. Red colored sunglasses will even show you the potential for infrared simulated photographs.

Sign the confidentiality agreement to bid on this listing at Flippa

I was recently was looking at a websites at Flippa, and I was prompted to “sign the confidentiality agreement to bid on this listing” before I could even view the website for sale. What a fucking joke this is! Nothing like this would ever hold up in court, it is so silly. People have  fake usernames, something like this would be so difficult to enforce, it just wouldn’t be worth the time or the money.

Scott shares his Shark Tank presentation.

yummy

After recently catching an episode of the TV show The Shark Tank. I thought it would be fun to give my Shark Tank Presentation to get investors for my idea! Why not right? I have no idea if my business venture is any good, but like the others coming on the show to pitch their business idea to the investors, I thought why not pitch mine?? I have been working hard and have been very passionate in pursuing my idea for about 18 months, and have had some impressive results. I am not a dotcom millionaire, at least not yet! But it beats flipping burgers.

What is even more interesting about my business idea versus anyone else’s. I believe my idea to be so good and easily accessible, that no matter what your budget is, you can take my idea and earn money on your own.

My name is Scott R. Asher, I am an entrepreneur. I had started this blog to share my twisted and silly ideas with anyone willing to read. I have been unable to return to regular employment after being laid off from my job about three years ago. Making this website and taking part-time freelance positions from anyone willing to pay, is basically what I have been doing to pay my bills for the last 3 years.

  • My Domain cost $10.00 year
  • My hosting cost $60.00 a year
  • My WordPress CMS is is 100% free.

SO THAT BEING SAID! If you just-so-happen to have $70.00 laying around, and are looking for ways to make money, this might interest you.

The Million Dollar Idea

Craigslist Denver area rentals

I had to make a post about the amount of scams and spam in the rental section of Craigslist in Denver. …it is just killing me, it is almost crazy! http://denver.craigslist.org/apa/

I have been looking for a home to rent for almost 4 months, and over this time I have reached maybe 4 real people with a legitimate rental to offer. I have been contacted buy rent to own scams, brokers, credit report scams, send the money overseas scammers, it is just nuts!

I am a webmaster myself, and I have to be honest, it is shameful to see how thick the level of spam on this site is. It would be difficult to estimate the amount of scam ads or spam on the Craigslist Denver rental thread alone, but if I had to guess, I would say 90% plus.

What I find even more interesting, it is fucking hilarious that Craigslist has implemented all these “new” anti-spam measures on their site to only block real users. Just a fun fact to all this – I have recently tried to post on craigslist and had to verify my phone number to complete the post, and I was unable to do. As it turns-out, my phone number is being used by someone else, and from what I can tell, there is almost nothing I can do about it.

This has to be a real battle for craigslist, it will be interesting to see what happens.

If you are dealing with the same issue please leave your comment, I would love to hear your pain also.
